Kitchen Remodel Timeline: What to Actually Expect

One of the most common questions homeowners ask before starting a kitchen remodel is: how long will this take? The answer depends on the scope of your project, whether permits are required, and how quickly decisions get made. Here is a realistic, phase-by-phase timeline based on what we see in actual kitchen remodel projects in San Jose and Santa Clara County.

Phase 1: Design and Planning (2 to 4 Weeks)

Before any demolition begins, you need a plan. This phase involves meeting with your contractor, making decisions about cabinets, countertops, appliances, tile, and layout, and finalizing all selections. Many homeowners underestimate how long this takes — especially when waiting for cabinet samples, countertop samples, and tile options.

Key decisions made during this phase:

  • Kitchen layout (keeping existing layout vs. making changes)
  • Cabinet style, door profile, and finish
  • Countertop material and color
  • Appliance selection and sizing
  • Tile for backsplash and flooring
  • Lighting plan
  • Hardware and fixtures

Pro tip: Make every single decision before demo begins. Change orders during construction are the number one cause of delays and cost overruns.

Phase 2: Permits (1 to 4 Weeks in Santa Clara County)

If your project involves any electrical work, plumbing changes, or structural modifications, you will need permits from your city's building department. In Santa Clara County cities like San Jose, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, and Campbell, permit timelines vary:

  • Over-the-counter permits for simple electrical and plumbing work: same day to 1 week
  • Plan check for larger projects: 2-6 weeks depending on the city and current workload

Permits are not optional. They protect you by ensuring work meets code, and unpermitted work can create major problems when you sell your home or file an insurance claim. A reputable contractor will always pull required permits.

Phase 3: Demolition (1 to 3 Days)

Demo is the fastest phase. Your contractor will remove existing cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring, and any walls being removed. For a typical 200-300 square foot kitchen, demo takes 1-3 days including debris removal and disposal.

Phase 4: Rough Work — Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC (1 to 2 Weeks)

If you are moving plumbing, updating electrical panels, adding recessed lighting circuits, or installing range hood ventilation, this rough-in work happens before walls are closed up. This phase includes inspections by the city building inspector at rough stages. Inspections need to be scheduled in advance and can sometimes add a few days to the timeline.

Phase 5: Drywall, Insulation, and Painting (1 Week)

Once rough inspections pass, walls are closed with drywall, taped, mudded, sanded, and painted. If you are not changing any walls or plumbing, you may skip this phase entirely.

Phase 6: Cabinet Installation (3 to 5 Days)

Cabinet installation is typically a 3-5 day process for a standard kitchen. Custom or semi-custom cabinets may require more time for fitting and adjustments. Note that custom cabinets often have 6-10 week lead times from order to delivery — this is one of the biggest sources of project delays, and it is why ordering early in the process is essential.

Phase 7: Countertop Template and Fabrication (1 to 2 Weeks)

After cabinets are installed, the countertop fabricator comes out to measure and template the exact dimensions. The slab then goes to the shop for cutting and edge profiling. Most fabricators in the Bay Area have 7-14 day turnaround from template to installation. Stone countertop installation takes 1 day.

Phase 8: Appliance Installation, Backsplash, and Punch List (1 to 2 Weeks)

The final stretch includes:

  • Appliance delivery and installation (coordinate early — popular appliances have lead times)
  • Tile backsplash installation and grouting (2-3 days)
  • Lighting and fixture installation
  • Hardware installation on cabinets and drawers
  • Touch-up painting
  • Final city inspection if permits were pulled
  • Final walkthrough and punch list

Total Timeline: 6 to 12 Weeks for a Full Remodel

Adding up all phases, a full kitchen remodel in San Jose typically takes 6-12 weeks from the start of construction. Add the design and permitting phases and the total project timeline — from first meeting to move-back-in — is commonly 3-5 months.

What Causes Delays?

  • Permit delays: Cities get backed up, especially during busy seasons
  • Custom cabinet lead times: 6-10 weeks is standard; order early
  • Countertop lead times: Popular slabs sell out; have a backup option
  • Change orders: Changing your mind mid-project ripples through the schedule
  • Appliance backorders: Certain appliance models have multi-week lead times
  • Subcontractor scheduling: Electricians and plumbers are in high demand in the Bay Area
